Learning Carpentry Knowledge Base
Carpentry - learning a new skill? If your skills or background revolved more around office work for example and you had little to no experience in the carpentry field (or other types of manual labor) but decided to learn these types of skills, please share your experience and feedback.
What is an easy way to learn carpentry? I am kind of a hands-on person and good at crafts, but I have never got the hang of carpentry. I want to learn how to build tables and shelves, not so much construction work. Also, what is the basic set of tools to get, and does anyone have any ideas how to do small projects in an apartment space. Insight - thanks for the feedback. Actually, yes, this is potentially for making $. I am a graphic designer and I keep having ideas for designing furniture. It sounds like I might want to find someone to collaborate with.
What's the best way to learn carpentry/construction skills needed for home maintenance/improvement? I am a homeowner and would like to improve my carpentry/construction skills. I am a teacher and have the summers off, which I would like to spend improving my house. This isn't just to save money; I really want to learn how to do it. I once converted a garage into a sculpture studio, so I have some skills/successes (can build a wall, install new windows and doors, wiring, put in a floor) and some failures (leaking skylights). I've also put in fences, built bookshelves and done some plumbing. Plus sculpture! I know I could take classes at a tech school, but I'm looking for other hands-on ideas where I could learn from someone. Books are great but I need to SEE it and be able to ask questions. Though I have the summers off, they are short and I have young kids. I'd like to work a bit for someone for free in exchange for the teaching - is that feasible? I'm not incompetant, but I am female :)
Learning about carpentry? Okay well i would like to learn about carpentry without having to make carpentry my lifes work i just would like to learn it as a second trade where would i go to learn about it do they have schools?

I just got admission in the Uni in the carpentry course and its been a week but still can't get how to use the tools and learn basics of carpentry. Like where to start with? I got all the basic tools needed. You know, I would like to know some good websites that start from the basics and then go deeper into the understanding of Carpentry, building and construction. Appreciate any help. Cheers.
Where do I learn fine carpentry? I live in London, and I've always loved working with wood, but have never had much opportunity to pursue it further. Where can I go to learn the more decorative art of woodwork? I.e. Formal dining chairs and inlaid boxes rather than installing skirting boards? I know it's not as practical, but it's what I'm most interested in.

Where(website) can I learn some carpentry skills to help me build a chicken coop? Hello, there! We have some pet chickens in our backyard and we're very very happy with them. But I thought that I should build something for our feathered friends. But I tried to build a small coop for more chickens, but I kinda find it difficult - I can't even drive a nail into wood! I suck at carpentry, so I thought of learning some carpentry tips. Do you know a website where I can learn some carpentry so I can be prepared to build chicken things like a big feeder and a small coop? Thanks in advance!
Where can I get basic carpentry skills? I need some knowledge of carpentry before I go up north to learn how to build log homes. I don't know anything about how to build a house! haha Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Where can I learn carpentry/woodworking for a hobby, not a career? I'm already a grad student, so I don't want to do this for a career, but I've always been fascinated with carpentry. Seeing as I live in an apartment (no garage to buy tools/practice) and have no previous experience (other than some shop class in high school), how can I get my hobby going? Are there classes for people like me? I don't care about legal/technical stuff, I want to learn the art ... how do I do that? PS: I'm in the DC area if it helps any Thanks for any help
Should middle school and high schools have specialized programs? I'm looking for opinions on this question. I believe all students should have reading and writing classes but I think middle schools and high schools should gear their studies towards specific professions. The kids who are interested in algebra and plan to use it in a career they are interested in should only have those classes, kids who want to be chemists should only have classes geared to that career, kids who want to be car mechanics should only take classes for that career etc. In other words, instead of making these students go through various general classes they would attend classes they are interested in. We need to train them for a career or job they may want when they graduate from high school. We need vocational schools for middle school and high school kids who may want to learn a specific trade. We need trade schools for those who want to learn carpentry. Many kids who know they don't want to attend college can be trained in middle school and high school so when they get out they have a plan and can go into that career without additional training. I see so many kids floundering and unsure what they want. They become fustrated and take any job just to get by or they don't work or go to school at all. Vocational programs would be beneficial to the kids and it would keep the failure and dropout rate lower. At the end of elementary school students should take aptitude tests. If there are students who don't have a specific interest in a field they would be kept in general classes. I think both the students and the teachers would be much happier.. I don't know where the funding would come from or what the cost would be to revamp the entire educational system but it is something to think about.
Where can i find a simple blueprint as an example for the SkillsUSA States carpentry contest? So at my technical high school i won the silver medal in the written districts test. All was good. But now I'm realizing that I'm wayy over my head. I really would like to know the fine details of the competition. How long will i have to frame the small structure? Can i find an example of past years' blueprints so that i know more of what I'm up against? Is there anything i can do to learn to frame faster and more efficiently?
how to get into carpentry? My husband is a painter/decorator but wants to get into carpentry. He is still learning but he is already quite skilled. I'm thinking getting a job will be difficult as he has no actual experience and he needs to earn at least £18000 in order to cover our outgoings. Anyone have any ideas how he can get into the trade? What qualifications do employers like carpenters to have? Any advice would be appreciated!
How to learn basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry for DIY use in my home? Please, serious answers only. I'd love to hear from professionals in these fields - and not sarcastic 14 year olds giving advice. :) I DO NOT want a career in any of these fields - I have a successful career as a marketing executive. However, as a single fearless woman who just bought her second house, I want to enhance my limited DIY skills so that I can tackle more projects myself (saving money and gaining satisfaction of doing it myself!) Again, I work full time and am NOT looking for a career or to be licensed, so I dont have the flexibility or time to do apprenticeships, journeymen positions, or working in the trade (unless this is the only wait to gain the experience I am looking for). So, is trail and error the only way? Is book learning and trying things hands on in my home enough? Thanks for any good advice. And any advice for the must have tools in each area would be great, as well. Thanks! Wow...great answers...thanks guys! I'll look for some geneal books, use the wealth of the internet, and use good old trial and error. The idea of night classes is a great idea as well... Thanks again! Jules
Carpentry classes in montreal? i am a full time university student in montreal and i really want to take carpentry classes for beginners for general interest, im not looking for a career in this, i just think it would be fun to learn how to make little things from wood. Maybe something once or twice a week. the only thing is that i'm not fluent in french so i would prefer them to be in english. does anyone know where i can do this, or any organization that offers these classes? thanks.
How to get NVQ when you are self-employed? Hi, I'm learning part-time for ICA in carpentry and I am self employed as a sole trader(carpenter).Have been working as a carpenter for a company, but now they struggle to find any more contracts,so do I. At college they said, that if I want NVQ,I have to be employed. Can anybody tell me what is the best way to gain NVQ when unemployed and with low (low) budget?
How do I learn about hardware tools...? I mean tools that men use for carpentry or auto-maintenance. How do I learn about different things like wrenches, rackets, different kinds of drills, nail guns, etc.? A website or what? Apparently all older guys are pros at this kind of stuff but I haven't a clue so I need to learn. How?
what is the best kind of work to pursue if you have learning disabilities.? i have a.d.h.d. and i also have some dislexsia thats where i get my numbers and leters turned around, i am in my late 30s and i spell and wright at the 3 grade level. i was wondering if there is any one else out there that could share with me the type of work they do ? what profestion they are in and how they got there with having learning disabilities, i have allways done labor type work, because if anything tecnical comes up i cant do it fast enough to please a employer, and when i do it becomes so stressfull it makes myself sick. if you have learning disabilities, i am enterested in what kind of work you do and how you make a living, what kind of trade could i get into that i might secseed in ? i have done plumbing, carpentry, welding, worked on electrical stuff, operated cainsaws, fell small trees, all kinds of stuff good enough for working on my own house, but if i tried to get a job with a plumbing contractor i wouldint even have a chance. i just cant get to that next level.
Can anyone help me find work in Vienna Austria? I`ve been looking on websites for a couple weeks now and just can`t find anything in the building industry. My German is not good but am learning, The translation sites don`t realy help me either. I would of course do anything to start with until I get to know the city a little but would prefer Carpentry, tiling, or some sort of building work. I will be there in a few weeks time,
Do you know where I can find some good DIY instructional videos? I am wanting to learn home improvement in general. Things like carpentry, electrical, construction, and so on. I have seen some shows and some are clear and thorough but they only give you little snippets and I would like a good video resource I think it would be a good way to learn thanks.
Where to Learn a Few Different Trades? I was wondering If anyone knew any good websites I could take a look at or some books I could read (preferably websites so I don't have to pay) so that I can learn a few trades. Right now I work as an Electrician, and I want to pick up some plumbing, carpentry, masonry, drywalling, painting, and any other useful trades. I plan on being an electrician or at least something related to that, but I really want to learn other things as well, I think I may ends up turning to more of a handyman career. I love fixing stuff and making things work, its something I enjoy a lot, so I want to get good at everything. Does anyone know of any good resources I can use? (oh and by the way, I don't want to take any classes or anything, just websites or books I can read) Thanks a bunch in advance!
Christmas present for mom? I am a student so I don't have too much money but I have been learning carpentry for a while now and have a small shop so if someone cold suggest a present that I could make my mother for christmas it would be appreciated. By the way I was thinking of somethig like an end grain cutting board.

What type of tool did Jesus have? How old was he when Joseph gave him his first Tooling session and showed him how to knock up his first Pine dresser? Why did Jesus bother learning Carpentry when he could have just magicked furniture? What Jeez think of IKEA crap if he could see it?
Carpentry or CNA II? Which will give me better pay while going to school? Over the summer I'm going to take a trade so I can have better pay while going to school. I'm thinking of CNA II or Carpentry. I would like to know which would be better and are the working hours of carpentry flexible? For example, can I work in the evenings while I take classes in the morning? Is it easier to find a job as a CNA II or with carpentry? I was also considering stopping school to go into Job Corp and learn Cisco Networking then start school back up in January, but I'm getting older and want to get my degree. I did want to take welding but it's not offered until September. What do you think? I'm working as a CNA now and I feel my body slowly slipping away. Carpentry is shorter than CNA II, I think but will I be able to find a job that suits my needs quickly? Is cabinetry more flexible? I'm too fat for the military, LOL. I should have joined when I had the chance. That is my ultimate goal, though. What about if I get certified in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and Windows Vista over the summer?
Some questions about joining the military? If you take the ASFAV test and score very high, are you required to go learn a language in the DLI? Or can you opt out of it and settle for less demanding life like getting a skilled labor job such as carpentry or driving trucks. Also if you don't want to see as female people as much as possible to avoid temptation to lusty thoughts, what job should you get in the military? Are there females in the boot camp?
what is the best way to learn something? I want to learn carpentry, dance, sailing, gardening, how to take good pictures, how to captivate with my writing, how to draw and paint, how to sew, how to teach english, how to make those videos on youtube lol, how to be more thankful, to administer first aid, how to swim good, well you get the idea lol, i want to learn ALOT....but is the best way reading about it and doing it, or getting a "teacher" to show you how? and it cant be to expensive...ah the poor kids with so little money who want to learn so much. TT TT
Are You An Apprentice In Carpentry Looking for A Project? I am getting a cat soon, and I'm on SSI Disability. I have these blueprint schematics all drawn-up for an incredible horizontal three-level 3-D cat cubical-shaped maze, a series of walls interconnected by strategically placed hole cut-out's in the walls on the inside, on the outside of the cube leading inward, and on the horizontal floor/ceiling to interconnect the levels as well. I don't have a lot of money to have this built, and I'm sure I could find some donated plywood scrap sheets in good condition. I just want someone to build it for me, and sand the pieces before they're secured together. Interested? By the way, the reason I want to have this contraption built is because I'm moving into a new place that's slightly smaller than where I'm moving from, but a lot cheaper and nicer building. I want my new kitten to have a brand new play area that doesn't TAKE UP a lot of room, but gives the ILLUSION of having lots of space and dimension. This design would give my kitten a learning/play area, with lots of room for hiding out and exploring, without costing me a lot in terms of square-footage being taken up in my new place. Micah
IS age 36 or 37 too late to get into carpentry/plumbing/etc.? I have been out of work for more then a year. I am not taking advantage and in fact look everyday for work. Unfortunately for me it seems my entire working career has been in customer service which is so general that I am not getting anywhere. I was in the process of getting my degree when I got laid off and is on hold indefinitely. What I like to know is I was thinking about learning a trade. Being a carpenter, plumber, or electrician as I love anything to do with homes. My question is I will be 37 this aug, the local community college offers courses in each but is my age to old to get into those fields and I should do something else or not?
career change! what I’m doing is tearing my body apart! I don’t know where to start, any ideas? hello all, I’m getting older, currently I`m a project manager for a real estate co. st.louis area, but I also do a lot of the other things because I’m a jack of all trades I can pretty much do it all from design to handling permits and inspectors, planning, finish carpentry all the way down to general labor, today carried 45 buckets of dirt out of a basement now my back is killing me and I just had back surgery a year ago. ill be right back at the hospital if I keep this up, so here I am. I feel like I’m wasting my talents. if had to put together a resume my experience and education would look something like this ..project manager3 years...ironworker 10years 3years training...skills and knowledge of various trades...had my own small construction co...3 years engineering drafting in high school...1 year of AutoCAD. I have learned a great deal about computers, I would like to find a career which I could apply my skills and make at least 80k in a computer related feild..any ideas?
I am looking to become a Carpenter, is there any advise anyone could give me on achieving my goal.? I am in high school right now, and I just got my acceptance letter to Vangared (the technical school in my area, were I will go into the Carpentry program), but I don't know were I should go from there. Should I be doing anything else right now to prep myself for the real world. I want to learn how to both design and build houses. I want to build houses for the rich so that I will have a lot of money to go toward the other houses I plan to build. My main goal is to build houses for the not so rich people so that they can rent or even buy them. So that these people will have homes to call their own. I have been down the semi-poor road and it ain't fun. That is why I refuse to build duplexes or apartents, cuz they aren't as hommie, and they aren't respected nearlty as much.
How was Jesus' teenage years and his twenties left out in the bible? On the new testament, why there is no such mention of Jesus when he was in his 13-late twenties? No story about him, no mention of how he grow up. He was born in a manger from a virgin and learn carpentry from joseph then on the next page he's healing people before he was crucified. Is that a little something important to leave out of his story of him being a teenager or young man? Who knows, he probably a bad jew with no friends in school or get picked on by his classmates.... Ever wonder why?
i think my brother should go into the seabees.? but he has a learning disability and doesnt test well hes best at hands on learning he did carpentry at voc and for 5 years since but lost his job awhile back i think he should check it out will he be discouraged by tests?
I moved in to Detroit recently and waiting on my EAD.? Is there any software, hardware or computer networking jobs that I can do from home.I'm fed up sitting home and not doing anything.I dont mind learning new skills like electrical, carpentry or anything mechanical if someone is willing to train me. all suggestions are welcome
free schooling or close to it? I am wanting to eventually buy and sell properties and there are some things I would like to learn that will help me save a lot of money I would like to learn the following trades carpentry, plumbing, hvac, electrical, flooring, landscape, drywalling, etc... while license or degrees are not that important to me I would like to have them but the skills is what is most important to me I am wondering if there are any ways to acquire this kind of knowlege for free or atleast under $400 per skill any tips hints or leads thanks

HotJobs When you're the employer or hiring manager, you want to know: "What's in it for me?" Here's the problem: since our resume is about us, we tend to write it from the perspective of our own eyes. So it's only natural to want to talk about what WE want. For example, here is a typical clunker found on too many resumes these days: "seeking challenging role in a dynamic, growth-oriented company where I can demonstrate my excellent skills in []." Hit the delete key, please! A Better Way to Get Noticed The shocking fact today is that no one wants to read your resume. Recruiters and hiring managers are busy people with a long list of other things to do as well. As a result, the person who scans the hundreds of resumes that may be submitted for each position spends less time than ever on any given resume. Many staffing professionals estimate that it may be 20 seconds or less. So it makes sense to make th So it makes sense to make the most of those few seconds to grab them quickly and motivate them to read more and make that phone call. Hiring managers are looking for one element that will make them stand up and take notice of a candidate. That one element is a strong benefit to the employer. When you provide an employer benefit, you speak their language. They want to know more. Unfortunately, too many resumes lack this. Two Approaches Here is an example. Suppose you have the skill: "Excellent oral and written communication skills." How can we answer the question, "So What?" in the mind of the employer? Here's how: Offer an example of how you've used these skills in your job to the benefit of your employer by writing an employer benefit bullet like this: "Wrote and presented successful training program for 155 company new-hires, resulting in measurable gains in company's inventory efficiency over 12 month period." The first example statement is a cliche. Focus on the Goal Your resume should be a hard-hitting sales tool designed to accomplish one goal: get the interview. To accomplish this, add an achievement list to your resume. Get rid of these cliches: "proven leadership & managerial capabilities", "accomplished leader", "ability to build, motivate & mentor." Turn each one into an achievement by asking the question, "So what?" after each one. Now, describe the benefit that your employer gained from each example. When you're finished, you'll have a list of achievement statements that all answer the "What's in it for me?" question that's on the mind of every hiring manager who will read your resume in the future. http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-the_one_question_your_resume_must_answer-477 Taylor Swift Rewards Code Listen every night at 8:50 for your Taylor Swift rewards code worth 25,000 points! - Tied Together With A Smile Trivia questions for Wednesday August 13,2008 - Remedy for Life Trivia Remedy for Life. Coast Guard and possible careers in law enforcement/firefighting? It's been my dream to become a police officer and it's something I've been working towards for a while now. I'm close to finishing out my Associates degree in Criminal Justice and then I plan to enlist in the Coast Guard. Anyway, something I've always had an interest in getting involved with, but not necessarily making a career out of, is firefighting. I've been told by several veterans to take up a trade of some kind while in the military (ex: carpentry, wielding, plumbing, electrician, mechanic, etc.) because if something happens to me and I get hurt badly enough to be disqualified from pursuing police academy, I have something to fall back on a bit. I really like what's entailed of the Damage Controlman (DC) position, but I wanted some more information from people that have done it, or are familiar with the position. It sounds like you're basically the CG's Fire Department but you also learn wielding, carpentry, plumbing, and a few other trades. Anybody have information they'd like to share? Re (USMC DARTHJA & m.eiselstein): I've been heavily considering enlisting for a few months now and I finally narrowed down my two choice branches to Navy & Coast Guard and then eventually settled on CG as my choice pick. As for law enforcement, I know I can become a cop with an Associates (even less in some cases) but I really wanted to do military first for both personal reasona as well as a few economic reasons. I don't think I'd ever want to shaft becoming a cop to be a full time firefighter but I could see myself doing part-time or volunteer while having a full time police job. And I thought that maybe DC in the Coast Guard could be a chance to experience firefighting in a career way.
i have a chance to study a vocational skill, should i go for automotive technology or building trades tech? Building Trades Technology (which includes carpentry, HVAC, electricity, plumbing, and remodeling and repair) OR Automotive Technology?? I want the one that will give me the best short term job while i finish up my degree in college. The one that will pay the best/best opportunity/best job quality/opportunity for the future in general. Best skill to learn now that might be usefull later. So which one?! Ok, well to give more details, I am a female studying engineering and might possible switch to chemistry/biochemistry/or nursing. These are both skills ive always been interested in (building and auto) and I don't even know the bare minimum basics when it comes to cars, so i'd have to learn it all.
if you could go back in time a learn one of these skills which one would it be and why? 1) learn to play a musical instrument 2) study really hard in school for a career 3) the fine art of wooing the opposite sex! 4) a skill like carpentry or cooking painting etc 5) politics and social studies 6) religous studies 7) sports eg. football, martial arts, gymnastics 8) writing novels/journalism/peotry etc 9) languages 10) first aid (maybe to help someone in particular) i know which one bill and ted chose but how about you? i would choose either martial arts or languages. kick some butts and then bragg about it in hindu!

Christians: What was Jesus like as a baby ? ? I'm not looking to start something here, but I have always found it rather difficult to imagine that God came down in the form of a baby; does this mean that at one point in the Almighty's life here on earth, He was helpess and ignorant of the things that adult mortals like us take for granted? You mean he had to learn how to walk, cried when he was hungry and needed his diapers changed, had to relearn how to read, spoke in baby prattle before articulating his first word, had to learn the basics of carpentry, had to learn how to feed himself? etc. etc. I wonder why the bible contains so few details about this stage of Jesus's life? I truly mean no disrespect, but I've wondered on and off about this, and would like some insight. Plus, I'm not the only one with such questions in mind. thanks in advance.

I am in debt, and thinking about a debt settlement company, ne 1 with advice/ personal experience?? Im a young man who just recently has found a carrer in union carpentry. I during my "learning" years amassed roughly 10000 dollars in unsecured debt. The problem that is while my earning potential is great, im still a apprentice making roughlym 30-35k this coming year. I am behind on all 8 of the unsecured accounts and have sought cuncil through Superior debt services. My agent has put together a 12 month package for that will have me paying 5000 to settle those eight debts. The iodea is to not pay or contact these creditors again and they will settle for less. From what I have researched so far, it sounds legit. I would like any info/ personal experience user may have had, any help/ advice would be greatly apprcieated!!
And what, exactly, do you Christians make of the oft-repeated claim the "Jesus was a communist"? Personally, I find this line of argument offensive even though I am Agnostic. From what I have read Jesus was a man who learned the business of Carpentry from his foster father Joesph. Later, he was known to have dabble in the Fishing industry. Hardly a resume that would imply Communism. The "punk rock" band Reagan Youth released a song entltied "Jesus was a Communist". This was was a band started by singer Dave Rubinstein (Dave Insurgent). Dave became a heroin user and dealer. His girlfriend, Tiffany Bresciani, supported both their drug habits by prostitution. A familiar customer in a truck hired Tiffany and the two of them disappeared. A few days later, police on Long Island stopped the same truck and discovered Tiffany's body in the back http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reagan_Youth I laughed when I read this. A fitting end for one who wold try to tarnish the image of one of History's most important figures. Those lousy degenerates! Adding to my amusement was the fact that "Dave Insurgent" had also tried to tarnish the image of another of History's most important figures, Ronald Reagan. They got what they deserved, if you ask me Espresso Kid: Show me ONE teaching from Jesus that demands "class warfare" and violent overthrow ....you can't ,can you? onegaishimasu: you display the symbol of "Anarchy"? Lol, that an idiot! Have you even graduated from High School yet? I doubt it. Moron Lol @ "You have no understanding of communism at all. Honestly, calling somebody communist shouldn't be a bloody pejorative" - Yea...the ideology that KILLED 100 million people shouldn't be a "pejorative"....LMAO...are your family all IDIOTS too?!
