Does anyone know of any such programmes? Many thanks in advance!

College courses. CAD/Drafting, Carpentry, Cosmetology? I am 28 female and I feel awkward because I really love carpentry, I live in a small town and Carpentry has always been "males", I would like to go but afraid of being rejected. My mom tells me to do something fun like cosmetology. Ugh.. i don't want that. doesn't sound interesting. I love old houses, I enjoy remodeling/repairing homes. I enjoy building things. I was torn inbetween carpentry and drafting. I would love to be able to ged a degree in CAD. I would like to hear from people who're in CAD/ Drafting, Carpentry and Cosmetology. Let me know your good thoughts about it and any horror stories you may have. I go to the college Wed to take my math/english assesment test's. I know, some may say I'm too old to go to college but atleast I'm going! I obtained my GED in Dec. Now, I want to make something with my life.I'm located in Centralia, IL Cosmetology does sound fun, but is it really a good business to build a life with?
where can i learn shuttering, carpentry, formwork in london? I am looking for taught courses in carpentry but specifically Shuttering / Formwork
Should I take a carpentry course? I want to sign up for a carpentry course but my husband is against it. He says its a waste of time because women aren't good at woodworking. "Not built for that sort of thing". I have mixed feelings about this. Most of the people in the class are men, and maybe my husband has a bit of a point because I don't see many girls hammering nails and sawing wood in my neighborhood. But I've always wanted to try it, should I give it up just because I'm female? Seems kind of unfair. Advice?
I'm seriously thinking of re- training as a carpenter wheres the best place to do it? I've found these two companies: http://www.constructiontrainingservices.co.uk/ and this one http://www.accesstraininguk.co.uk/carpentry-courses-training-uk.html anyone have any idea which is better through first hand experience or otherwise? Also presumably trades people will be in demand again sometime in the future? Do you think a career in green energy construction would be wiser as provided by the first website would be better?
I have intermediate carpentry skills and want to learn trim carpentry but having trouble finding course/class? I live in Chicago and I want to get into business as a trim-carpenter. I have a lot of construction experience and intermediate carpentry skills.I would prefer to do a crash course rather than take a job with somebody else as i am a quick learner and want to be out there putting my skills to use sooner rather than later.
Best place to find home study courses? I'm looking for home study courses, preferably on DVD, that teach you basic skills like home repair, carpentry, cooking, sewing, etc. I'm not interested in lengthy, professional certification or degrees, just basic how-to. Any ideas?
Is it wise to take a carpentry course if you want buy and rent out houses? I want to buy a beat up house, fix them up and rent them out but i know i'll need to be a handy man. I grew up fixing houses, but theres plumbing, electrical stuff i don't know, even some other stuff. I was thinking of taking a year course at a local college, its a apprentice carpentry course entry, or journeyman? i don't know a guy just told me. Just imagine if i could know what i'm doing i could fix my own houses and save alot of money, what do you think? Sounds Good?!
Can I do two full time college courses? At the moment I'm in my first year at college, studying carpentry and in September I'm going to start a second year of carpentry. But I was wondering if I'd be able to do a full time brick laying course as well. (Both at the same college) The carpentry course will be two, maybe three days a week and the brick laying course is only two days a week, so if they're not on the same days, would they let me do both? I'm guessing it'd be easier to talk to my teacher about it but I thought I'd see if anyone on here knows. Thanks. Because I'm under 18 my course is free but if I wait a couple more years, it'll cost about £400. And also next year I'll have four/five days off a week and it'll just gets boring. So I was thinking of doing an extra course so I have something to do and it'd be good for the future.
advise on home courses please? any info? i'm thinking of doing a carpentry home course and i'm a bit unsure about it! do they class as a real qualification to employers? are they just as good as going to college or uni? i have no qualifications in carpentry at the moment, but if i do this course do you think i would be eligible to get a carpentry job? do you think they would employ me with this qualification? answer as much as you can thanx! i live in the uk. and just to be clear it's a carpentry home course working up to level 3. thank you!
Bay area carpentry class for homeowners? I'm looking for a carpentry class. I live in Oakland. I want to do some home-improvement myself, and I'm basically a carpentry idiot. Just looking for a primer-type of course to help get me going. Thanks.
What is the best health care field career choice with the easiest difficulty level for college courses? I'm asking for someone else. She is 30, with 2 kids, high school dropout (GED), wanting to go back to school for an Associate's degree and thinking of something in the health care field because the pay is good. She isn't much of a "people person" or outgoing. She likes to work with her hands and fix things and would probably prefer something like carpentry but doesn't want to struggle in a "non-traditional" field being female. She's worked as a cashier, cleaning houses, and as a truss builder for a roof truss company. She is something of a "Ms. Fixit". She's thought about forensics just because she finds it cool but isn't sure she can hack the schooling. Same with X-Ray tech... honestly, all the anatomy and chemistry and such will be challenging for her. So what other choices are there? Dental Lab Tech? Optical tech? What's going to be the easiest for someone who has more common sense than book smarts? Looking for a starting salary of at least $25k a year (US).
I am finding it impossible t find a basic woodwork class in or near Manhattan New York. Please Help!? I'm really interested in eventually building a musical instrument. A lute perhaps. But before I start looking in to instrument making I want to take a basic carpentry/woodwork course. You know, sawing, filing, varnishing, building joints etc. I live in Williamsburg NY, and I figured that there would be a course somewhere in Manhattan for sure.....but no luck. I've looked on the internet, searched the yellow pages, but nothing! I don't need to become certified in anything, nor do I need to gain any kind of academic credits. I just want to be shown the basics so I know what tools to get and then practise. I'd appreciate any help I can get!

What is the origin of the first living cell? If one believes that a living cell can come into existence by coincidence, then there is nothing to prevent one from believing a similar story that we will relate below. It is the story of a town: One day, a lump of clay, pressed between the rocks in a barren land, becomes wet after it rains. The wet clay dries and hardens when the sun rises, and takes on a stiff, resistant form. Afterwards, these rocks, which also served as a mould, are somehow smashed into pieces, and then a neat, well shaped, and strong brick appears. This brick waits under the same natural conditions for years for a similar brick to be formed. This goes on until hundreds and thousands of the same bricks have been formed in the same place. However, by chance, none of the bricks that were previously formed are damaged. Although exposed to storm, rain, wind, scorching sun, and freezing cold for thousands of years, the bricks do not crack, break up, or get dragged away, but wait there in the same place with the same determination for other bricks to form. When the number of bricks is adequate, they erect a building by being arranged sideways and on top of each other, having been randomly dragged along by the effects of natural conditions such as winds, storms, or tornadoes. Meanwhile, materials such as cement or soil mixtures form under "natural conditions", with perfect timing, and creep between the bricks to clamp them to each other. While all this is happening, iron ore under the ground is shaped under "natural conditions" and lays the foundations of a building that is to be formed with these bricks. At the end of this process, a complete building rises with all its materials, carpentry, and installations intact. Of course, a building does not only consist of foundations, bricks, and cement. How, then, are the other missing materials to be obtained? The answer is simple: all kinds of materials that are needed for the construction of the building exist in the earth on which it is erected. Silicon for the glass, copper for the electric cables, iron for the columns, beams, water pipes, etc. all exist under the ground in abundant quantities. It takes only the skill of "natural conditions" to shape and place these materials inside the building. All the installations, carpentry, and accessories are placed among the bricks with the help of the blowing wind, rain, and earthquakes. Everything has gone so well that the bricks are arranged so as to leave the necessary window spaces as if they knew that something called glass would be formed later on by natural conditions. Moreover, they have not forgotten to leave some space to allow the installation of water, electricity and heating systems, which are also later to be formed by coincidence. Everything has gone so well that "coincidences" and "natural conditions" produce a perfect design. If you have managed to sustain your belief in this story so far, then you should have no trouble surmising how the town's other buildings, plants, highways, sidewalks, substructures, communications, and transportation systems came about. If you possess technical knowledge and are fairly conversant with the subject, you can even write an extremely "scientific" book of a few volumes stating your theories about "the evolutionary process of a sewage system and its uniformity with the present structures". You may well be honoured with academic awards for your clever studies, and may consider yourself a genius, shedding light on the nature of humanity. The theory of evolution, which claims that life came into existence by chance, is no less absurd than our story, for, with all its operational systems, and systems of communication, transportation and management, a cell is no less complex than a city.
How can an entry-level Call-Center young-guy get into the Carpentry trade/building houses in BC? This question is also somewhat an emotional outpouring reflecting the confusion and predicaments that I'm experiencing in my life recently, so I do apologize if I may be off-topic/verbose/and not making sense. I am a 24-yr old university drop-out (2 years of university, took Architecture courses) who have had a few Calling Center experiences, the biggest employer so far being TELUS. Consequently, it seems only Calling Center employers would hire me for the wage I am expecting (~$12/hr). But then again, maybe I am just afraid to try other industries...it distresses me already just ~thinking~ about the possibilities of bothers and fears of putting myself out there in job markets other than call center, expecting every field to tell me "you're no good at it; work for $8.00/hr instead". I don't know why I'm such a wimp; I apologize for being such a wimp. In fact I apologize for just being. The real problem with me is that I am basically born an artist... In addition to having sold a lot of pieces, I just love it. But you can't get a job as an artist... On top of that, I'm actually just not good with people. In every call center job I was in, I had received awards because I'm smart (i was good in school...which employers usually don't care about...but my being smart did help actually), but really, at the end of the day, I am sooo not suitable for it. I'm really good with my hands, and have done a little carpentry, and I guess my question is, how do you steer yourself away from a career path you KNOW is suicidal, and strive--without a college degree--to get into a field you have ZERO credentials/prior experience for? In other words, how do you start over? I can borrow money from my very generous parents, enough to support my living until I finish ~some~ kind of school (vocational school for carpentry maybe?). But what then? Wouldn't I be just where I was at before? A lot of my grad friends aren't doing anything with their degrees. I've been freelancing for 6 years now (a la "use day job to fund night job") for something as uselss as Fine Art which gets no money. Should I just do another 6 years of just gritting my teeth through my day job and ~wish~ my art will be promoted some day? Should I ditch art altogether as a career and just focus on something which I like which *DOES* pay the bills (e.g. carpentry). I would REALLY like to build houses (framing) for a living...that is my daydream. The first time I've done carpentry it, it was apparent to my supervisor that i was good at it, and that I LOVE it. But I am really confused (sorry)...while I know it's totally do-able, it just feels so impossible...getting into something totally brand new with no qualifications...but somthing you're actually good at, something you were actually made for. Thank you so very much for reading. p.s. I specialize in pencil portrait drawing, wood carving, and antique restoration i.e. Japanese Swords. I cannot use my prior carpentry experience on my resume, because that was in prison
Carpentry school? Cabinet making? I am looking for a college that has a degree or certificate in cabinet making. Does anybody know the best school to attend and gain all the knowledge necessary to come home and start building cabinets and start a business? I don't want a school that just gives you a little course in cabinetry, I want the full on instruction from A to Z. Thanks.
Is being a carpenter wasting my GCSEs? I am predicted As and Bs and when i went to my carpentry course interview a kid got in who hadn't been to school for 3 years and had no GCSEs. i feel like i could be throwing my hard work away and never want to regret such a life changing decision.
Where offers construction / building courses in Devon, UK? My other half has been building for a little while now and would like to make a go of it long term. He'd really like to do some sort of course (recognised if poss) in general building skills, perhaps bricklaying, blockwork, plastering, that sort of thing, but try as I might I cannot find any info anywhere. We live in North Devon and I had hoped the local colleges might do something but all they seem to offer is foundation courses and I think he's a bit beyond that. He doesn't want to get into plumbing or electrical work, he's already good at carpentry, but he'd like to have some formal training in general building skills - can anyone suggest where might be a good place to start??? Thank you! Devon may be in England but that is still part of the UK so my question still stands. I did in fact include it so that Americans (of which there are many signed up to Yahoo Answers) had a clue as to it's location in the world. Are there any sensible suggestions???
I'm very unsure - what career and school courses should I take up? (warning: lots and lots of detail ahead) I transferred to this new school for Grade 11. Partly because I felt my last high school wasn't really encouraging, I've never thought much about career-related stuff during my first two high school years. Now that I'm in a greatly funded and supported school, I've been stressing out about what I want to do for the future. I was given the course choices right after I registered a few days before school started, but I made very bad decisions since, again, I didn't know what I wanted to take. Now I have to go to classes that I don't really want to for a whole semester, and many classes that I want to switch to are at full capacity next semester. I think that what I'd like to do is become a musician. I took basic music classes in the past and I have some experience with playing the clarinet, but at this point I think it might not work out well because I don't own any instruments and I'd have to take prerequisite courses, which I don't have a lot of time or room for in my timetables before I graduate. I also thought of visual arts or graphics design-related work. I know that traditional artists have difficulty making a living out of that, so I probably won't go for that. I'm pretty interested in the latter, but I don't know how much money can be made out of that. Also, having to take the prerequisites for the related courses and stuff would make very little room for other ones... I think it's possible to change directions and go for medicine-oriented work. I know what courses must be taken, but to be honest, I'm not very interested in that field anyways. I only considered it because I think that you can be easily successful if you do pretty well in school. Another thing I wonder is this: how do other people already decide early in their lives to do something with law, biology, carpentry or a bunch of other "professional" careers? It seems like I only want to do artsy kind of stuff, but it's like everyone would want to do that anyways. I do think I have artistic ability, however. Something else I think about is that doctors, accountants and all of them benefit society, while arts and sports stuff do not, really (but I know athletes can make a lot of money). I'm pretty unsure on whether I should go for something that would make me lots of money or something that I'd always have fun or feel good doing, and I can't find the balance in-between. No one in my family has attended university and I could easily be the first one, but I need to find out what I want to do. My parents want me to be some kind of doctor or engineer... that's alright, but again, I don't know. I talk with the guidance counsellor every week and he tries to help me decide, but it kind of sucks going there just to talk about what I think I want to do and changing my mind a lot. I want to make a definite decision. I realized I would type something pretty long, but to those who bared with me - thanks! I really appreciate anyone who tries to help!

i dont know what to do!- carpentry or drylining? just started a carpentry apprenticeship, havent done a lot of carpentry with the company im with.done a bit of drylining and i seem to like it more than carpentry, seems more active if that makes sense.ive been doing carpentry at college since september, i like it but im not great or one of the top ones.the thing is that my mates reckon that carpentry has a more secure future.my dad also doubts it, as he reckons its piss easy and he can do it no trouble. the other thing is ive looked up the average pay and drylining SEEMS to rake it in compared to carpentry, and it SEEMS to be easier to go off subying. what does have a more secure future? the company im with does a lot lot lot more drylining etc than carpentry, the other thing is im working with a mate that ive known for years so its pretty decent and we're both thinking bout doing a drylining course and becoming a qualified dliner.what would you do??? thanks alot!! helped me loads thats exactly what im gona do..monday morning quit carpentry in a decent way.gna be alota bollox from my dad n mates lol but really badly wana do drylining.thanks a lot!!!!!

Wood working or carpentry tools? My husband is getting in to wood working and carpentry. Nothing extreme, just building a few things for around the house. He has a jigsaw, miter saw, sander, and access to a belt sander and table saw, plus your normal tools. I'm trying to get some Christmas ideas, what else does he need? I don't want to ask him, of course, because then he'll know what I'm up to. Can you give me some ideas as to what would be the most beneficial things for him to have? Much appreciated!
(girls and guys)i need advise, where do i go? I'm and guy who just turned 18. my job is in construction and all my co-workers are guys. i go to a technical school for plumbing, electric, carpentry and hvac courses, again there are only guys in my classes. i'm friends with a lot of them but i'm starting to get tired of being around guys all the time. i'm not necessarily looking for a relationship, i just want to meet a couple girls i can be friends with. i have one or two from when i was in high school. but really everywhere i go its only guys. any advise or where i could go or what i could do?
IS age 36 or 37 too late to get into carpentry/plumbing/etc.? I have been out of work for more then a year. I am not taking advantage and in fact look everyday for work. Unfortunately for me it seems my entire working career has been in customer service which is so general that I am not getting anywhere. I was in the process of getting my degree when I got laid off and is on hold indefinitely. What I like to know is I was thinking about learning a trade. Being a carpenter, plumber, or electrician as I love anything to do with homes. My question is I will be 37 this aug, the local community college offers courses in each but is my age to old to get into those fields and I should do something else or not? I know your never too old but my worry was I know you usually have to apprentice, and so on. I do not mind working from the ground up. I love the idea of someday being my own contractor, or just being a part of making amazing homes, whether it is frame, finish, etc carpentry, innovative electrician work. Just what I read keeps talking about kids right out of high school. I don't have a problem and don't feel old, but I wanted to make sure if I put forth the effort that I would get a fair chance. What is the best way to break into it? Should I do some courses at college and get certified or is that a waste of time? Thank you for all the answers!
Becoming a cabinetmaker? Carpentry schools? I am looking for a college that has a degree or certificate in cabinet making. Does anybody know the best school to attend and gain all the knowledge necessary to come home and start building cabinets and start a business? I don't want a school that just gives you a little course in cabinetry, I want the full on instruction from A to Z. Thanks.
does anyone know of a company or business that will give you a national certificate for completing a course? I need a carpentry and masonry certificate for completing a 2 year course at a career and technical school.
How many moms-to-be put up the baby's crib with their husband/significant other? I want to share that special moment with the baby's father, of course, but neither one of up are exactly what you'd call "carpentry savvy," i guess. So just to see, i was just wondering who did that or who had someone else... like their own dad... help them with it.
Can anyone help me find work in Vienna Austria? I`ve been looking on websites for a couple weeks now and just can`t find anything in the building industry. My German is not good but am learning, The translation sites don`t realy help me either. I would of course do anything to start with until I get to know the city a little but would prefer Carpentry, tiling, or some sort of building work. I will be there in a few weeks time,
Do I need the SAT to go to a tech school or a college with those courses?? I am taking Carpentry in high school, I haven't asked if its okay to take that class to get into architech because I only want to design houses. So is that class good to get into architect? And do I need to take the SAT for architech or to go to any other tech school. One college Im looking at is SCAD in Savannah and there are or tech schools like ITT tech and stuff like that. Please let me know.
I like girls, and I want a girlfriend..but I don't know how...HELP? Help? I can't talk to girls I get nervous and my personality is way off. I freeze up and it's the way I've been forever. I've never had a girlfriend since elementary school. And it seems like the only time I can act like myself is when Im drunk. Almost all of my friends have girlfriends and have lost their virginity. I think I have good qualities and I'm very well-rounded. I run almost daily (6 a week) and want to qualify for boston marathon this year. I did carpentry for a year and now I'm studying it in college. It's hard for me to get a girlfriend I'm interested in too because there are no girls in my college courses (carpentry). Only time I can really come into contact with new girls is with all of my friends. I think a girl would love to have me as their boyfriend I just can't come out of my shell to prove it. I think I look good enough, I just need confidence. HELP! Will a girl ever approach me?? I've never really had a serious girlfriend so I don't know what to do or say. Will I naturally develop confidence in the future? http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3697/p1000033qz.jpg
College is frustrating!!? Can anyone tell me if J. Sargent Reynolds offers a construction or carpentry course? I don't think my GPA is high enough to get into 4 year college, so I was planning on going to J. Sarge for 2 years and transferring......Just thinking about it is stressing me out!
SOUTHEAST OHIO, Anyone have spare car/truck they'd trade for experienced Building Services/Maintenance or Art? A few months ago I was laid off my job as an Art Director. On the same day my wife was coming to get me (had to give up company car), she was 1st car hit in high speed 4 car pile up, she was fine a month later but our Jeep was totaled, insurance paid off Jeep but left us with-out extra vehicle. My wife uses our only car to get to work. We live in a rural area, zero jobs, no public transportation; my unemployment is quickly running out, we need another car quickly. I WANT TO WORK! I have 22 yrs experience in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, drywall & painting! Have done many remodels. If you have a good running spare vehicle and need some work done it would be a win win situation for us all. Of course you'd buy materials for any building needs and I'd provide labor in trade for good running vehicle. This is not an ad. I am not selling, I am looking to buy with my labor. Thank you!

do you have to be a carpenter to fix a house for profit? I'm fully willing to put the work it takes to fix a beat up house and sell it (i'm talking about 6 months to a year, not a quick fix) i plan on living inside a house and fixing it while i live, i was planning to take a 6 month carpentry course though but it turns out applications stopped being taken last week, i wanted to take carpentry because my goal is to fix houses and rent them out. But i don't need to be a carpenter right? thats why i got youtube and the internet? Just that plumbing is really going to drive me nuts. Oh yea when i was young i helpped my dad fix acouple of houses from scratch, so i know drywalling and what not.
school+boyfriend+future? my boyfriend and i have been dating for a year and a half now, and we both live in kingston, ontario. im in high school, grade eleven, and he should be in college, but he took a year off to work. we are head over heels for each other and definitely want to spend the rest of our lives together. for my final year of high school, he would enroll into his one year program. and wed both move to calgary, so he could work as a carpenter, and id have a school there. i know, why are you going to move half way across the country, for a boy? but the answer is, because i love him. but now, after he completes his carpentry course, he wants to take a two year electricians course. so, this has kind of ruined our plan. now im supposed to go to school, either in toronto, vancouver or calgary. ill be there for two years by myself. while he is here in kingston. wed visit eachother every other weekend ... but thats only if i go to toronto, i dont know how wed visit each other if im in the west. after he finishes, he didnt say hes going to move where i am, and hes just going to move where he has to work. and this breaks my heart. i understand we cant always be together, but it hurts. so i guess my questions are, 1. how do i accept that he needs to go to school, and that i need to go to school. 2. how can i accomplish living by myself (seeing how that was always a fear of mine). 3. how can i get over the fact that ill only see him twice a month, if im lucky. 4. if he doesnt move to where i am after hes done school, how will i handle that?

Is carpentry classes in college rated at a 100 level class so I can join the air force? I am trying to join the air force and they said since I have a g.e.d. that I need 15 credits that are at a 100 level credit. The class is a college course and I will receive 15 credits through the course but will they be at a 100 level? I believe that it is at a 100 level all of the classes start with 111,112,113 and so on and they are all 3 credit classes I was just not sure if they were at a 100 level so since it has 100 in it is that how they conside it a 100 level? I know it sounds stupid but I just want to make sure before I take these classes, and I want to take classes that I know I will pass in 1 semester so I can join right after that.

Industrial & Mechanical style paintings and artists? I'm doing a beginners painting course, and I wonder if anyone out there knows of some artists who painted with an industrial style (use of greys, machines and machinery, tools, industrial buildnings and interiors). they can be from any movement, but I just want those who focused on industrial and mechanical things. I want to use that style for my own project, which is to paint the carpentry and metal workshops near the studio.

However I would also like to use it for buffing my car with the right buffing pad attachments of course. What is the difference between the palm and right angle sanders? Which one is more suitable for my application? And which size should i buy, I'm thinking between 5" and 6". Thanks

was this some sort of scam..........? a series of ads ran in our local paper stating there were a variety of educational courses available (carpentry, electrician etc). when my friend rang up she tried to find out more but she got told they knew nothing, they were only the hired call centre, but she was told that a teacher/lecturer would call back. she was asked for all her details. but no one rang back and it's been over a month. does anyone know what happened and is the paper responsible? she's very upset as she thought the education would help her get back into work and now they've got her details she's also worried what they've done with it.

Installing Dead Bolt Locks ~ Help ~ I'm chicken, but want to TrY!? Yes, I'm chicken ~ afraid that I could mess up my beautiful old doors. I'm afraid of taking the drastic step of drilling the 2 1/8" hole [for starters]! I've got 3 doors that need locks; they're all beautifully refinished, heartpine [house is 100yrs old]. [& I hate the idea of messing them up anyway with a newly purchased lock, but the skelton key isn't quite adequate.] These doors already have the original cut-out in the edge of the door for the skeleton key mechanism insert which holds the knob. Of course, the new Dead Bolt would be put above this. It's curious that I'm chicken to do this, because I have done eVeRy manner of house renovation task ~ from wiring and plumbing, to roof work and carpentry! Maybe I should hold out and hope to find an old mechanism that will fit into the existing door edge cut-out, that has a keyed [not skeleton] element. Please, tell me I don't need to be afraid to forge forward w/dead bolt installation; and what to be careful about.
How to start an Apprenticeship? I have been looking into what I want to do for a career. I have come to the conclusion that Carpentry is something that interests me. But I don't know much about how to go about starting an apprenticeship in Carpentry. Would I have to find an employer myself before enrolling in a course at a college? I live in Ontario Canada, I know it varies everywhere. If someone could tell me the basics that would be great! Thanks in advance!

What other options do I have besides getting a BA? A BA is great and everything, but I don't see the purpose of taking so many of the "required" (and expensive) courses if you don't need to for your profession. I am looking for a residential campus with state college-like fees, and a decent reputation. I don't want to waste time and money on a four year liberal arts degree if I don't need it. What are other options? I don't see any, especially since I'm not studying a trade like carpentry or culinary arts.
What to do/say to convince my hubby to go back to school/get a different job? My hubby is 33, he dropped out of high school at 17 and never went back to get his GED. He currently does construction, but complains a lot about his back and knees hurting and that he won't be able to do manual labor for much longer. He's very interested in computers and has said before he'd like to take so courses on computer design so he could get a job doing that and have actual benefits through a company. In the 7 years we've been together he's not worked with a single place he's a had benefits, mostly back-woods privately owned electrical or carpentry companies that pay in straight cash. I've tried suggesting and asking him for years why doesn't he at least go back and get his GED, the local community college offers the GED courses free of charge, and he could even take them online if he didn't want to go to campus. He always has some reason not to though, he'd be too tired when he got home, school was never his thing, he can't concentrate at night, the evenings are his time, getting his GED won't make a difference, etc. . . I'm really not trying to nag him, but I am aware it may come across as such, mostly I want to see him with a job that gets him out of the weather as much as possible, will provide him and the family with some sort of benefits, and into something he actually takes interest in. Manual labor is all he's ever done, so he's used to it, but he constantly says how much he hates it and wishes he'd stayed in school instead of dropping out when he was younger, but never makes the effort to go back when he has the chance to. For ex: He'd been talking since the Summer that this semester he was really going to get signed up for his GED courses, and I was so happy about that, but the sign-up time came around and every day he had a reason why he couldn't do it, then last minute sign-up came and I told him it's his last chance, he said he'd do it tomorrow, but when I called and asked if he did, he said it slipped his mind. So, now it's too late again. Please, any suggestions on what to say or how to convince my hubby that doing this won't be a waste of time and effort? Thanks! I'd love to, but we have 3 young kids, the youngest is on the autism spectrum, and hubby is not ok with the idea of me working because his mom and neither of his grandma's ever worked.

disregard dis? Charles Machado English 11 05-09-07 Career Paper Carpentry, a career in which you could do lots of different things, and watch your creation comes together. You could work for a union, work for someone you might know, or maybe even start your own business and just become your own boss. But everything is possible with patience, you cant just start away from college by creating your own business your going to need some previous knowledge on how to run things, and plus your going to need to know people that would be interested in your services. Salary wise it will all depend on what you’re working on, and how big of a project it is. You’re not going to get the same profit from building a shed than building a house. If you might be working for a union the starting salary might be around $17-$18 /hour. The regular earning could change depending on the weather, because carpenters usually lose work during the cold seasons. Work conditions could be cold and brick or it could be hot and very sunny. But everything is worth it at the end; you get to see your project complete and you also get paid. The good thing about being a carpenter is that you could also help yourself by doing your own work around the house without having to pay somebody to do it, and have friends see your work so in the future they would call or refer you to their friends. Most of the business comes from how many people you know and how good of a job you do, because if you leave something not well done, well there’s goes your money. So whenever you might be working on something, make sure you do Machado 2 your best possible work, thus people giving other jobs in the future. Your work all depends on you, so don’t mess it up. College wise, it isn’t necessary to become a carpenter, but it definitely could be really helpful. To become a carpenter, you’re going to need to know math most importantly because you will be dealing with numbers throughout your job and fractions etc. My choice, would be a school of technology which allows you to go hands-on, not just read about it in textbooks, and plus for a degree wise, there many out there for carpenters, you just have to choose the right one and go with it. There certificates which are helpful in union companies, so you can become a contracted carpenter and not just a laborer who helps around. In my case I’m thinking about getting some hands-on work first so I have the basics down, and then might go to college to catch up on my math and learn new techniques and new machines out there that are invented to make jobs easier. It will be up top you to decide on what exactly you plan on doing, if you would like to start your own business, not only will you have to know about carpentry but also business management, wouldn’t want your business to fall. Becoming a carpenter could take you too many other jobs, such as architecture. Architecture is planning the building and creating it without having to do much of the hard work outside, but still have to know what materials your going to need and how much of it. Of course, architects make more money than a regular carpenter might make, but it is also a hard job to do, wouldn’t want to mess up a calculation and then making the rest of the project come out wrong, carpenters are just instructed on what to do and they Machado 3 do it with the information the architect gives them. Some cases architects are also carpenters and do their own work, which is double the work, but double the money. If you would like more information on carpentry, you could always look up books, my favorite would be Careers without College: Building written by Peggy Schmidt, the developer of the series. Or just ask any carpenter you might know, and let them know you’re interested in becoming a future carpenter and if they could give you pointers or maybe even a job as their apprentice.
