Learning Carpentry

IS age 36 or 37 too late to get into carpentry/plumbing/etc.?

I have been out of work for more then a year. I am not taking advantage and in fact look everyday for work. Unfortunately for me it seems my entire working career has been in customer service which is so general that I am not getting anywhere. I was in the process of getting my degree when I got laid off and is on hold indefinitely. What I like to know is I was thinking about learning a trade. Being a carpenter, plumber, or electrician as I love anything to do with homes. My question is I will be 37 this aug, the local community college offers courses in each but is my age to old to get into those fields and I should do something else or not?

  1. Hi, No you are not too old; any trade can be done up to whatever age you are as long as you are physically capable of doing it. Best Wishes!
  2. The trades aren't doing so well now. I'm a woodworker and out of work. For the past year other carpenters have been coming by our shop looking for work because they lost their jobs. If you are a talented person, your chances will be better. There are TONS of talened EXPERIENCED carpenters out there that are out of work. Hopefully things will change for the better, but one thing is for sure - times are 'a changin'.
