Where can I find replacement glass bubbles and putty that holds them in place, for a metal carpenters level?

Thanks for the reply, this is to repair a level which has sentimental value to a family member, will not be required for precision leveling.

  1. You really can't do that. The bubbles have to be meticulously aligned in order for the level to. . . well, to be level! That has to be done in the factory. For that reason you won't find these things for sale.
  2. Depending on the brand you can often find replacements from the manufacturer. You might also talk to someone at a good hardware store such as 7 Corners in St. Paul, Minnesota see web site below. Also try posting something in woodworking forums or do a google search for 'woodworking magazines' and see if you can post something on some of them. I have seen replacement bubbles for some of the Stanley levels and my father needed a long level (8') that was not available many years ago for plumbing up tall doors so he made a long level and found bubbles to use.
  3. Here is one on E-bay. I have bought a few of these at old hardware stores going out of business. They were in a wooden box with sawdust around them. They were assorted sizes. They are out there, just not many. Good Luck http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Stanley-Level-bubble_W0QQitemZ110241057675QQihZ001QQcategoryZ13873QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
