Learning Carpentry

how to get into carpentry?

My husband is a painter/decorator but wants to get into carpentry. He is still learning but he is already quite skilled. I'm thinking getting a job will be difficult as he has no actual experience and he needs to earn at least £18000 in order to cover our outgoings. Anyone have any ideas how he can get into the trade? What qualifications do employers like carpenters to have? Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. buy some wood and a saw
  2. ive got NVQs 1,2,3 in carpentry and joinery, which is more than enough. you can get on site with no experience, but your pay will reflect this. it also depends on what type of joinery he would like to do, ie- formwork, 1st and 2nd fix, finishings, kitchens, roofing. for instance, with formwork you can pretty much walk on a job with a hammer and be called a joiner these days. his best bet is phoning around, or walking onto a site and having a word with the foreman. his takehome pay would dwarf the sum you need for outgoings when fully trained.
  3. A nice arse, six pack and very good with hands
