Learning Carpentry

what is the best kind of work to pursue if you have learning disabilities.?

i have a.d.h.d. and i also have some dislexsia thats where i get my numbers and leters turned around, i am in my late 30s and i spell and wright at the 3 grade level. i was wondering if there is any one else out there that could share with me the type of work they do ? what profestion they are in and how they got there with having learning disabilities, i have allways done labor type work, because if anything tecnical comes up i cant do it fast enough to please a employer, and when i do it becomes so stressfull it makes myself sick. if you have learning disabilities, i am enterested in what kind of work you do and how you make a living, what kind of trade could i get into that i might secseed in ? i have done plumbing, carpentry, welding, worked on electrical stuff, operated cainsaws, fell small trees, all kinds of stuff good enough for working on my own house, but if i tried to get a job with a plumbing contractor i wouldint even have a chance. i just cant get to that next level.

  1. Use spell checker if you cant spell
  2. Something in the area of helping out others with disabilities. Who better to counsel and help those with disabilities than someone who has been there. Some job descriptions that come to mind are social work, attorney (provide advocacy), nurse, MD, sign language, phychologist, psychiatrist, etc., etc.
  3. Sit down, Calm down and listen.Stop worrying Learning difficulty has now been recognised as an increasing disability. So much so that it comes under the disability discrimination act. I have friends and family members with varying degrees of LD and they work in a variety of jobs. Contact your local MENCAP office and they have people who can give you sound advise and put you in touch with prospective employers. Farm work, Weaving dept supervisor,Construction worker, Digger driver. For any exams you are permitted to have a helper who can read the papers for you but not answer them. In extreme cases the answers can be verbal and the helper will write the verbatim,The answers can also be tape recorded. Best of luck hope this helps.
  4. You could try your local council. Ask about jobs in their parks department. Another route is to go to an employment agency. They will sort out suitable jobs for you and arrange interviews. Also they will advise you on interview techniques and ring afterwards to see how you went on. Incidentally your writing skills look OK to me, some spelling errors but your message is very clear, so don't put yourself down. I have seen much worse from people who are just to lazy to try. Good Luck. ♥♥♥
  5. I would contact your State Vocational Rehabilitation and also Goodwill as Goodwill has an extensive program to help people get jobs who can work and want to work. Goodwill could use a person like you to work in their stores maintenance department and they have good profit sharing programs too. Good Luck!
  6. It truly looks like you have some wonderful talents! I think you have the inspiration to have come to the correct conclusions. There are many jobs that come under the same heading as those you listed and no doubt there are a hundred more and you would do well to learn all of them that are related to what you do. There is no end of people who need your help and talent. Not all these handymen out there are so well prepared. Many of them don't know what they can get by with and will try anything including electricity and I've known some to cause more trouble than they can fix. I like to hire people who work like what you describe of yourself because I prefer to hire people I know I can trust.
  7. Firstly believe in yourself anyone can do anything they want to if they believe they can! By us there are employment agencies for people in your situation, one's called remployment and I think its national. They find people with varying disabilities work with companies that reconise that people can do the job they just need a few adaptions. If you struggle to spell and type ect you can get computer programmes that you speak to and it writes it for you ( I have one and they work really well once its set up) Im training to be a primary teacher which involves a lot of coursework and writing but I have a scribe for lectures and the computer programme to type up notes and coursework. Talk to your local advice bureau or jobcentre or council who will let you know what they can do. Or if you want to train then all colleges and universities have disability centres which will let you know the sort of help you can get, which can be used in work as well. Good luck, and above all beleive in yourself.
  8. If all you have is learning disabilities you should be able to do any kind of job you want to do.
  9. What about repair thing in play grounds or schools. What you should do is focus on your ability. With the help of an employment agency you should be able to find something. Or find somewhere to volunteer. Like a man I know at access arts, he has a brain injury and he builds shells and other handy things like that.
