College courses. CAD/Drafting, Carpentry, Cosmetology?

I am 28 female and I feel awkward because I really love carpentry, I live in a small town and Carpentry has always been "males", I would like to go but afraid of being rejected. My mom tells me to do something fun like cosmetology. Ugh.. i don't want that. doesn't sound interesting. I love old houses, I enjoy remodeling/repairing homes. I enjoy building things. I was torn inbetween carpentry and drafting. I would love to be able to ged a degree in CAD. I would like to hear from people who're in CAD/ Drafting, Carpentry and Cosmetology. Let me know your good thoughts about it and any horror stories you may have. I go to the college Wed to take my math/english assesment test's. I know, some may say I'm too old to go to college but atleast I'm going! I obtained my GED in Dec. Now, I want to make something with my life.I'm located in Centralia, IL Cosmetology does sound fun, but is it really a good business to build a life with?

  1. That's great that you're going to college...it doesn't matter what age you are - learning is a life long thing. So kudos to you! I also think it's very important to enter a field you enjoy. I have a degree in drafting and did CAD for quite a few years. I would say that if you enjoy drawing on the computer, and are a precise person then it's a great field. I went on to do graphic and web design because I wanted to do something more artsy on the computer, but if you enjoy mechanical type of jobs where you're drawing in and calculating dimensions and sizes of objects to make sure they fit together then I think you would enjoy drafting. Depending on where you work you can make a very decent living doing that as well. Which ever field you decide on, make sure it is something you love doing - because you will be doing it everyday!
